3 Top Tips To Improve
As a dancer, it can be easy to get caught up in constantly learning new routines and moves, but true improvement comes from drilling techniques into your muscle memory and addressing bad habits.
Here are three tips to help you improve as a dancer:
✅ 1: Stop Looking For More Content, Start Looking For More Techniques
The truth is there is no better way to improve than by drilling dance techniques into your muscle memory. #techniquetraining. 💪
Your techniques are the “how” of your movements, and without mastering them, it’s impossible to perfect your movements.
By drilling techniques into your muscle memory, you’ll be able to execute new moves with greater skill and improve faster!
“Count the number of techniques you know, not the movements – if you really want to improve.”
👣 2: Identify & Fix Your Bad Habits
Has your instructor ever called you out for the same mistake every week?
If you’re consistently struggling with certain moves or receiving the same feedback from your instructor, it’s likely that you’ve developed a bad habit in your muscle memory that is causing the same mistake again & again..!
As a dancer, you’ll need to find an instructor who can help you to identify the bad habits, instead of just calling out the mistakes. Otherwise, you will just continue facing the same problems and can never fix them. 😕
For example:
😈 Problem: Always off-time with your weight shifts.
❌ Root cause: Bad habit of taking steps that are too big.
✅ Solution: Take smaller steps instead of focusing on being on-time.
So identify and fix your habits, then you will finally feel a huge improvement.
📝 3: Set Dance Goals
Do you feel stagnant even though you’re religiously taking classes and learning new routines?
If you’re serious about improving, start setting concrete goals to help you measure your progress and stay motivated.
For example:
-Clean up basic arm movement
-Nail a double / triple spins
-Master super clean footwork
Tip: Go back to point number 1 above if you’re unsure about which goals to set! Start by finding the right techniques to work on, and then your goal will be to drill them into your muscle memory..! Then better yet, set deadlines with them. 😉
Start with one small goal and commit 10-15 minutes each day to working on it. With these tips, you’ll be on your way to becoming a better dancer in no time.
