I GET IT. Spins are not easy.
When I first started practicing spins and turns, it was always a love-hate relationship for me. There’s something so thrilling about nailing a perfect spin drill, but getting there..? That’s a whole other story. 😅
If you’ve struggled with spins like me, here are some key mindsets I want to share so that you can turn frustration into progress! 👇
1. Patience is Everything
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to give up when spins didn’t come easily..!
Progress can feel sometimes painfully slow—but EVERY PRACTICE SESSION COUNTS (with the right techniques)! Remember that no one becomes a spinning master overnight. Give yourself time and don’t give up, patience is your best friend.
2. Get your technique checklist ready
I used to expect improvement in my spins every single time I was practicing but it took me the long hard and disappointing road to realize that without setting techniques as goals, I was literally just practicing blindly..
So write those techniques down, and focus on mastering 1-2 every time you’re practicing.
3. You don’t fall, you lose balance
It is normal to feel scared that you might ‘fall’ when you’re finally aiming for that double or triple spins! But hey, it is normal to lose your balance, you don’t default actually ‘falling down’.
Just remember to keep your free leg untangled and be ready to place it on the floor when you do lose a bit of balance!
4. Identify those bad habits
When you struggle with a technique for too long, it is very highly likely that you may have a bad habit that is blocking you from doing it properly.. Identify and eliminate them!
5. Video yourself
Checking your posture in the video is the best way to identify and eliminate those bad habits that are blocking your improvement!
5. Trust the Process
Learning to spin with control takes time, and I’ve had to remind myself of that often. Trust your body, trust your practice, and trust the process. There will be good days and bad days, but each one is a step forward. Keep at it, and you’ll see the progress over time.
Every struggle is part of your growth, so keep spinning and enjoy the ride!
