As you progress to an intermediate or advanced level, your improvement will feel less obvious and more stagnant.
When I first started dancing, progress felt like an exciting climb. Each class brought new moves, new sensations, and a surge of excitement as I learned every new step. However, as I progressed to a more intermediate and advanced level, the journey began to feel different, and sometimes, it felt less rewarding. If you’re feeling this way, know that you’re not alone. Here’s what I wish someone had told me at the start of my dance journey:
1. At a Beginner’s Level, You’re Focused Learning New Moves Rather Than Working On Techniques
Early on in your dance journey, every class introduces a wealth of new movements and terminologies, making progress feel quick and rewarding. However as you advance, the focus shifts to refining and perfecting these moves, making progress seem slower but more profound. 💪
2. At an Intermediate/Advanced Level, You Start To Realize the Importance of Fundamentals and Techniques
The challenges you find, will often be because of issues from your fundamental techniques. Revisiting and strengthening these basics can feel dry, but is crucial and marks the beginning of true mastery. 😉
3. Bad Habits Become More Noticeable
Habits like improper posture or inconsistent timing can hinder your progress. Identifying and correcting these habits is most definitely frustrating but essential for improvement. ❌
4. Moves Get Harder to Learn
Intermediate and advanced movements require more precision and control. Finding these moves challenging is a sign you’re pushing your boundaries and growing. 😉
5. You Become Harder on Yourself
With progress comes higher expectations, leading to self-criticism. Remember to be kind to yourself and acknowledge your progress, no matter how small. 🥳
6. You Start to Compare Yourself to Others
Comparison can undermine your confidence and motivation. Everyone’s journey is unique, so focus on your growth and use others’ successes as inspiration. 🤩
7. The Pace of Classes Increases
As you advance, classes move quicker. This can feel overwhelming but is a testament to your growth. Embrace the challenge and let it push you to new heights. 😬
✅ However, Consistency and Quality Practice Will Never Fail You. Trust in the Process and Keep Working On Those Techniques.
Consistency and quality practice are the keys to improvement. Even when progress feels slow, trust that every practice session contributes to your growth. Stay committed, refine your techniques, and celebrate every small victory. Your dedication will pay off, and your dance journey will be rich with growth and fulfillment.
Keep dancing, keep learning, and trust in your unique journey.
With Love, B
